You ask ChatGPT for the best company in your field in your town. It names three competitors and not you. Your Google rankings might be fine, and it still leaves you out.
That's not bad luck. ChatGPT decides who to mention differently from how Google ranks pages. Once you know how it decides, you can work on it.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?
ChatGPT answers in one of two ways:
- From what it learned in training. The model has read a huge amount of the public web. If your business rarely came up there, it doesn't know you exist.
- From a live web search. For many questions, especially "best X near me" questions, ChatGPT searches the web, reads a few pages and summarizes them. If those pages don't mention you, neither does the answer.
Either way, it's looking for evidence that you exist, what you do, where you do it, and that other people vouch for you. Businesses usually get left out for one of these reasons:
- Your website doesn't say clearly what you do. A clever slogan on the home page tells an AI nothing. It needs plain sentences like "We're a plumbing company in Tampa that handles emergency repairs."
- Nobody else talks about you. AI answers draw heavily on third-party sources such as reviews, directories, local news and forum threads. A business that only describes itself on its own site is easy to overlook.
- Your details don't match across the web. A different address on Yelp, an old phone number in a directory, or a name spelled two ways makes you harder to identify as one business.
- AI crawlers are blocked. Some websites and security plugins block AI bots by default. If ChatGPT's search crawler can't read your site, it can't cite it.
Can I get my business listed on ChatGPT?
Not in the way you'd list it on Google or Yelp. There's no ChatGPT business directory where you fill in a profile and appear in answers.
That's the confusing part, and it's also good news. There's nothing to pay for and no one to apply to. You get mentioned by making your business easy to find, easy to understand and well spoken of, which is the same work that helps you everywhere else.
How do I get ChatGPT to suggest my business?
1. Say exactly what you do, and where
Every important page should answer the obvious questions in plain language: what you offer, who it's for, and which areas you serve. Put the answer near the top. AI tools quote pages that answer directly, not pages that build up to the point slowly.
2. Build one clear page per service
"We do everything" is hard to recommend. A dedicated page for each service, written around the questions customers actually ask, gives an AI something specific to match against a specific question.
3. Add structured data
Structured data (schema markup) is code that labels your business name, address, services, hours and reviews for machines. Nobody has shown that it directly earns AI citations, so treat it as a foundation rather than a shortcut. It's cheap, it removes guesswork, and search engines already use it.
4. Get mentioned elsewhere
This is the step most businesses skip, and it matters most. Ask happy customers for reviews. Get listed in the directories your industry actually uses. Answer questions in the forums and communities where your customers hang out. Every genuine mention elsewhere is evidence an AI can find.
5. Keep your details consistent
Check your business name, address, phone number and website everywhere they appear: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, social profiles and directories. Fix anything that doesn't match.
6. Don't block the bots you want
Check your robots.txt file and any security settings. OpenAI runs separate bots for training its models and for searching the web to answer questions. You can block the training bot and still allow the search bot, but blocking everything by accident keeps you out of the answers.
7. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools
ChatGPT's web search has drawn heavily on Bing's index. Many businesses only ever set up Google Search Console. Adding your site to Bing takes about ten minutes.
How to check whether it's working
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers would ask, in their words: "Who's the best [service] in [city]?", "Who should I call for [problem]?" Try a few variations, and repeat every month or so.
Expect answers to vary from one attempt to the next. You're looking for a trend, not a single result. Also check which sources the answer cites. Those are the sites worth getting mentioned on.
The short version
ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find, understand and trust. Clear pages, consistent details, a site AI crawlers can read, and real mentions on other sites are what get you there. None of it is a trick, which is why it lasts.
